SchUM, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

During the High Middle Ages, there evolved in the three diocesan cities of the Rhineland – Mainz, Worms und Speyer – a richly Jewish community life. These communities merged into a network that has sustained and shaped the religious and cultural life of Ashkenazic Jewry until today. In August 2012, these so-called SchUM cities, working with the Cultural Ministry of the Rheinland-Palatinate, started their joint application for World Heritage Site recognition on its way. And on July 27, 2021, the SchUM cities were added to the World Heritage List.
