Embedded in forests and fields in the middle of the temperate upper Rhine valley, Speyer is the ideal starting point for brief trips to the left and right of the Rhine. The venerable University City of Heidelberg with its romantic castle is just as easy to reach as Ludwigshafen and Mannheim mit Germany’s largest Baroque castle. Located in the middle of the Electoral Pallatinate, Schwetzingen maintains one of the most beautiful garden parks of the Baroque and Rococo periods.
Very enticing is an idyllic drive along the German wine road, perhaps during almond blossoming time or during the Fall grape harvest, with obligatory visits to one of the numerous wineries along the road. A visit to the Holiday Park in Haßloch also belongs on one’s excursion program as does a drive into the Alsatian town of Weißenburg or a walk through Worms with a visit to its Roman Cathedral.
